Odds and Ends

James told me yesterday that I needed to post something interesting. Was that a shot? Is my blog really that boring? He said for me to write about something else besides what we do every day. I proceeded to tell him that the purpose of this blog is not for other people to necessarily read (though I LOVE when lots of people comment), but for me to journal about our life and what is going on, so that one day I can look back on it and remember the good and not so good times.

I am not good at coming up with a random topic, or interesting question for people to ponder and comment. But - I decided to try and come up with one random question a week to just throw out there to see what others have to say. These could be serious questions, or silly - pointless questions.

But, before I ask my random question of the week - let me just say how glad I am that the Beards are now in Abilene. We called them totally last minute last night to go eat at Chilis for dinner. They are awesome people that I know James and I both wish we would have known better when we lived in Dallas. So, now that they are here we can start a new, great friendship with such great people. They may not think we had a good time last night b/c Kaylee "had not had a nap" if you catch my drift - but we had a blast, and look forward to spending more time with them.

Okay.. here is my random question:

What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

Think about it and let me know...

When, Neil our son at the age of 15, got unexpectedly, and seriously ill while away from us in California, I had to buy last minute airline tickets to get to him at the hospital. As this was unbudgeted circumstances, it was really going to put us in a bind. Upon returning home, with Neil with me,
recovering, there was a check in our mailbox for $500 from "your angels". We have never found out who our angels were, and no one has ever let on. But it was a tremendous blessing. Thanks to everyone who acts as angels out there, and may I always look for ways to bless others.

Well, that's a tough one Leslie. I don't remember things that well...I work better in the time frame of a week rather than the time frame of a life time. This is not the nicest thing that has ever been done for me but it's the nicest thing that has been done for me in the last few days. We were at a dinner at church on Monday night and Chase was really squirmy (no high chair available) and kept trying to grab everything on the table. I was getting frusterated when a little old man that I didn't even know came over and offered to hold him for the entire dinner. He wouldn't take "no that's OK, you don't have to" for an answer. I love random acts of kindness. :)

I cannot believe you are making me think this hard. What a question! I do not think I can give just one thing as my answer. The "nicest" thing in my mind is probably a little off from the question but it would have to be the feeling of peace and comfort in knowing I have a core group of great friends who would drop anything and come running if I needed them. When my grandmother passed away the Frenches drove three hours with Stephanie 6 months pregnant to be at the visitation for me and then they turned around and drove back that night. Last week when Campbell was so sick I had several friends call to say that they could be here if I needed them just to say the word. When Cary's father passed away several of our sweet friends took time off in the middle of the day to come to the funeral.(one friend even flew in from a business trip and came straight from the airport)When I was put on bedrest while pregnant with Campbell all of my friends took a day of the week to keep Kaylee for me without me even having to ask. Each time we had a child our friends were there to love on them. The way they love our children as their own is amazing! These friendships give me little gifts each day so I would have to say those are the "nicest" things.
We look froward to many wonderful times with your family too. You are a blesing to us here in Abilene!

Luke and I had to talk about this at dinner because I just couldn't think of anything today. We both decided that it's probably the awesome gift of a college education at ACU from our parents. We don't have any debt at all, just because of them. What a nice thing, and they SO didn't have to do it!

You know I LOVE this idea. How many hours in the car have I spent pondering random questions to pass the time.....and then started calling the Mayos for some input???

I'll have to put some thought in to this one....

A fellow minister recently treated me to an hour and a half massage!! It was the greatest gift, and someday when I'm making the big bucks, I'll pass it on! (and tell James... I always enjoy reading about what you do every day!) :)

Mine's easy. It's the time the Mayos drove all the way to Dallas to see their friends the Murrays. Man, that was the b-e-s-t.

My in-laws came to visit us a couple weeks after we had told them we were pregnant. Charles' mom had started cooking all different dishes for us as soon as we had told them...casseroles, soups, desserts, etc. When they came to visit us she had brought me enough meals for a month! I was so tired all the time and had no energy to cook and Charles had been getting fast food every night for weeks. I don't think I have ever appreciated anything so much. I would just set one out to defrost in the morning and pop it in the oven at night. When they were all gone I was like "nooooooo!! what will we eat?" I am totally going to start doing this for friends when they get pregnant!

When we lived in Garland, and Mary Alice was little, I kept kids in my home to make money. We were pretty broke and had money for nothing! Someone in our small group (we still don't know who) put an envelope with $500 in our bathroom. The note read: To the Smiths From God. We were overwhelmed, especially since our small group was made up of young married couples like ourselves and we knew that this generous gift was definitely a sacrifice from whoever gave it to us. Also when we lived in Garland, I hadn't bought clothes in like-4 years or something. For my birthday, Michael and Kelly Taylor gave me a gift certificate to Town East Mall for $200 and told me to go get myself some new clothes. That one made me cry!

Iwould have to say when my husband was willing to move to Abilene to start our lives over so that I could follow my dream of getting accepted into the MFT program at ACU.
